Serve – Give – Learn

Nurturing our future community leaders by encouraging philanthropy and service learning is an ongoing commitment for the foundation. As part of that work JSBCF has invested $400,000 in Youth Philanthropy Advisory Councils that over 350 students from twenty three area high schools have participated in.

YouthServe an organization that empowers youth leaders through community service partners with the foundation to carry out this program. In addition to learning about community needs, diversity, nonprofits and philanthropy, these students award grants to nonprofit organizations throughout the Birmingham area.

Urban Food Project

The Foundation is working with REV Birmingham and the Urban Food Project to build a robust local food economy and increase healthy food access. The project operates a local food distribution system that improves production, purchasing and delivery of healthy local food to Birmingham restaurants, wholesalers and retailers.

By assisting producers and business owners, fresh fruits and
vegetables are more readily available and affordable to
Birmingham communities that need it most. This program sources healthy produce to corner stores, providing additional revenue for store owners and access to healthy food for residents living in
Birmingham’s food deserts.
